The Daatri Project

The Daatri Project, launched by four students from the School of Sustainability at XIM University, India, aims to reduce food waste on campus through a vermicomposting initiative. The project involved setting up a vermicomposting unit that transforms food waste from the cafeteria into valuable compost, promoting sustainable practices and creating a closed-loop system. Extensive planning included researching vermicomposting techniques and conducting community awareness sessions to educate students, faculty, and staff about the importance of waste reduction. Hands-on workshops encouraged participation and helped demystify the composting process. The initiative has successfully converted significant food waste into nutrient-rich compost, enhancing campus gardens and inspiring many individuals to establish their own composting units. Overall, the project has fostered a culture of sustainability, leading to a noticeable reduction in food waste on campus.

The project successfully established a vermicomposting plant on campus, catalyzing a circular economy that promotes the use of organic fertilizer both within and beyond the university grounds. It has significantly raised awareness among students about responsible consumption and educated food vendors on the importance of proper waste disposal practices. This initiative not only enhances sustainability on campus but also encourages a broader commitment to environmental responsibility in the community.
