TERRA VENT
TerraVent is an innovative sustainable cooling and ventilation system that utilizes locally available terracotta roof tiles to provide natural ventilation in rural areas. Constructed with terracotta tiles, mud mortar, and bricks, the system features pots on top that allow water to flow through pipes into the terracotta wall, which has voids for air passage. As the porous terracotta absorbs water, air passing through the wall is cooled, creating a refreshing breeze that ventilates the area naturally. This eco-friendly, low-cost solution capitalizes on terracotta’s evaporative cooling properties, making it an ideal alternative to artificial cooling systems for rural communities, effectively reducing heat in enclosed spaces while using locally sourced materials.
TerraVent, a passive cooling system utilizing terracotta tiles, has a significant impact on enhancing thermal comfort and air quality in rural India. By harnessing the natural evaporative cooling properties of terracotta, it offers a sustainable and low-cost alternative to energy-intensive air conditioning systems. The system effectively reduces temperatures in enclosed spaces through the evaporation of water absorbed by the porous tiles, improving living conditions in hot climates. Additionally, TerraVent’s use of locally sourced materials promotes resource efficiency and minimizes environmental impact. Its simple design allows for easy implementation and maintenance, making it an accessible innovation for rural communities.
