JeevanDhaara – Sustaining Life through Water Innovation

India, where over 60% of the population depends on farming, is facing an imminent water crisis that threatens its agricultural backbone. With freshwater supplies dwindling and contaminated water sources harming both crops and public health, the country is at a critical juncture. Economists even suggest that water may soon surpass oil in value. This crisis disproportionately affects backward communities, whose livelihoods depend on self-sufficient farming, making them the first to suffer from water scarcity. To address this, the project introduces Forward Osmosis Technology (FOT), a sustainable water treatment solution that uses natural osmotic pressure to purify water without the high energy demands of traditional methods. In its second phase, the project has incorporated a pre-treatment process and mineral diffusion to enrich water, promoting better soil nourishment and agricultural yields. The overarching goal is to achieve water security and agricultural resilience, enabling India’s farmers to thrive despite climate challenges.

Forward Osmosis Technology (FOT) has significantly transformed water treatment and agricultural practices by providing a low-energy, efficient alternative to traditional purification methods. The prototype development has validated FOT’s potential to address the water scarcity crisis in rural India while also integrating pre-treatment processes and mineral enrichment to enhance soil fertility. This improvement in soil quality leads to increased agricultural yields, effectively tackling both water scarcity and soil degradation. By promoting sustainable practices, the project supports food security and resilience in farming communities, ensuring long-term water availability and advancing sustainable development goals. There are also plans to extend this technology for urban and rural flushing uses.
