Tree Plantation and Climate Change Awareness Program
The project addresses the often-overlooked issue of climate change in Cuttack city, particularly its effects, such as extreme heat and fluctuations in temperature and rainfall. Its primary objectives include planting more trees, utilizing vertical gardening in limited spaces, and raising awareness among local adults and children about climate change and its detrimental effects. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes the benefits of tree plantation and encourages repurposing available trash for planting activities. The expected outcomes are an increase in green cover, a reduction in average city temperatures, heightened awareness of climate change, increased tree planting in confined spaces, and reduced waste heading to landfills. However, challenges such as a lack of interest among slum residents, indifference from students and teachers regarding plant upkeep, and reliance on religious practices for tree planting have hindered progress.
While measuring the short-term impacts of our interventions may be challenging, several long-term benefits are anticipated from our projects. First, an increase in foliage cover throughout the city could provide relief from the extreme heat that has become prevalent, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of Cuttack. Second, by engaging the community and educating children about contemporary environmental issues, we aim to foster a generation that is more concerned about the planet’s wellbeing. Finally, the project seeks to empower residents in slum areas with limited space for gardening, enabling them to create gardens without the need for extensive land. This empowerment could lead to a greater number of plants in congested and polluted areas, contributing to improved local environments.
