Carbon Farming: Cultivating Sustainability

The “Biochar Farming: Cultivating Sustainability” project empowers farmers with training on biochar production. By using crop residues to produce biochar, the project promotes carbon sequestration and enhances soil fertility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from residue burning. In Nepal, where farmers often burn agricultural waste, this initiative helps sequester carbon, improve soil health, and boost crop yields. A pre-survey assessed farmers’ knowledge, followed by hands-on training and demonstrations. By focusing on biochar techniques, the project equips farmers with tools to fight climate change and improve productivity.

Training farmers and students on climate change and biochar production has positively impacted individuals and communities. Farmers’ views on sustainable agriculture have shifted, and some have begun using biochar in home gardens. Students are also showing increased interest, driving them towards research. Biochar application is improving soil health and boosting crop productivity, while crop residues, once wasted, are now effectively used in biochar production.
