Empowering climate action through rooftop gardening: A community based initiative in Betila, Manikganj

The recent heat wave that affected the country prompted the launch of a project aimed at promoting rooftop gardening as a viable solution to mitigate extreme temperatures and enhance building protection. While urban residents generally have some awareness of this practice, many rural communities lack sufficient knowledge. The project specifically targeted rural areas, engaging local communities to increase their understanding of rooftop gardening. By enhancing comfort during hot seasons and fostering community involvement, the initiative sought to contribute to the broader goal of addressing global warming. Special emphasis was placed on involving youth, particularly school students, as environmental studies are often limited in developing countries like Bangladesh. Through seminars, participants were introduced to the concept and encouraged to engage in the project by participating in quizzes and essay competitions. Initially, there were challenges in convincing community members to adopt rooftop gardening due to perceived maintenance concerns; however, by highlighting its significance, the project successfully generated interest and participation. Additionally, a dedicated website was launched to provide information for those interested in the project.

The CoolRoof Greenscape project, led by BD Team-08 under the Students Society for Climate Change Awareness (SSCCA), has significantly benefited both the local community and the environment. By transforming a rooftop in Betila, Manikganj, into a green space, the project established a small ecosystem that fosters sustainability. This initiative not only cools the rooftop but also improves air quality and provides a habitat for insects and birds. The trees planted as part of the project actively contribute to combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. Additionally, the project aimed to raise public awareness about the benefits of rooftop gardens through educational programs at Gerua Model School, where discussions on climate change and the role of trees were conducted. Surveys conducted in local homes highlighted the community’s understanding of climate change and their willingness to adopt eco-friendly practices, promoting rooftop gardening as a viable method for environmental protection. Overall, the CoolRoof Greenscape project exemplifies how local, grassroots initiatives can foster environmental sustainability and enhance community involvement in the fight against climate change.
