Mangroves Restoration and Conservation in Chittagong City Corporation,Bangladesh to Combat Climate Change

The project identified critical issues, including the severe loss of mangroves, which play an essential role in carbon sequestration by capturing carbon at five times the rate of other terrestrial species. Additional challenges highlighted were biodiversity loss, limited public awareness, lack of community involvement, and insufficient resources. In response, the project set clear objectives aimed at increasing atmospheric carbon storage through mangrove ecosystem restoration, creating green belts, protecting coastal areas, and engaging local communities in sustainable practices. However, several implementation challenges emerged, such as ensuring the survival of planted mangroves amidst fluctuating tidal patterns and protecting them from grazing cattle. Limited access to the study area due to a lack of public transport, obtaining community support, and addressing the socio-economic dependence of local residents on mangrove resources added further complexities. Despite these obstacles, the project achieved significant outcomes. The enhanced carbon sequestration capacity of the mangroves contributes positively to combating global climate change. By strengthening coastal defenses and supporting local livelihoods, the project has made measurable strides in carbon storage and environmental resilience.
The coastal project has achieved meaningful impact through a mangrove plantation initiative, enhancing resilience along the shoreline. By planting mangroves, the project established a natural barrier that protects coastal areas from strong waves and future natural disasters. This initiative not only focused on environmental restoration but also emphasized community engagement. Throughout the project, the team actively collaborated with the local community to raise awareness about the critical role of mangroves in climate adaptation and coastal protection. Educational materials and direct involvement have encouraged the community to prioritize mangrove preservation, fostering a strong sense of environmental stewardship. The project also focused on educating youth, underscoring the unique benefits of mangroves—such as their capacity to store five times more CO2 than other forests—and their essential role in carbon sequestration and offsetting. This knowledge empowers young people to become advocates for environmental conservation, helping ensure the long-term sustainability of these efforts.
