Urban Gardens Project- reclaiming abandoned spaces
The Urban Gardens Project was initiated in response to the lack of green infrastructure in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi, where urban forests, parks, and gardens are scarce and mostly concentrated in privileged areas. Our primary objective is to address the neglect of urban green spaces by creating sustainable micro-ecosystems in Karachi, contributing to environmental restoration, biodiversity, and community well-being. Additionally, water scarcity posed a major hurdle, as many urban spaces lacked a proper irrigation system. The garden is now planted and is being maintained. It will soon grow into a proper space where butterflies could fly, insects could thrive, birds could migrate and drink water from, cats could sleep, elderly could come and sit, children could play and grownups could breathe a breeze of fresh air and have a moment away from stress.
The Urban Gardens Project, a pioneering initiative in Karachi, aimed to create a green oasis in an urban setting. By transforming neglected spaces into thriving ecosystems, the project not only beautified the city but also fostered a sense of community. The process of selecting plants, preparing the garden, and interacting with local residents was a fulfilling experience. Inspired by the success of similar projects, we envisioned a space where people could reconnect with nature and find solace amidst the urban hustle. The garden, once complete, will provide a sanctuary for diverse species and a peaceful retreat for the community.
