Less waste , More power
The present project has been to construct a biogas system as well as recycle food waste collected from university canteens which have been a challenge in generating high amounts of waste in recent years. This system will turn waste into energy, minimize the effects of improper waste disposal on the environment, and aid in climate change fight. Through minimization and better management of waste, the project not only helps to minimize greenhouse gas emissions but also creates energy for the university in the long run. Key challenges include managing the time required for implementation which was impacted by a two month non academic strike, and also securing sufficient financial support for the project. Despite these obstacles, we aim to create a long-term, eco-friendly solution that fosters environmental responsibility within the university community while offering a practical model for waste-to-energy conversion.
The effectiveness of the biogas project is dual in the sense that it has both environmental and social advantages or implications. We are able to recycle food that would otherwise be wasted in university canteens and reduce methane emissions since the food waste generated is converted into renewable energy. The goal of practicing a sustainable waste management system at the university is to take maximum advantage and make the people responsible to care about the waste they produce within the facility. Moreover, the biogas produced can be utilized as a clean energy source, reducing reliance on non renewable energy and lowering the university’s carbon footprint. This will set a precedent for similar waste to energy initiatives in other institutions, potentially influencing larger scale waste management reforms. The implementation of the system will offer educational opportunities, allowing students to engage with practical, environmentally focused solutions. Ultimately, our project promotes a circular economy model, where waste is transformed into valuable resources, contributing to a more sustainable future.
