From Landfill to Legacy: Building Green Communities through Waste Innovation

The project addresses Kathmandu’s waste management crisis, which generates 516 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, projected to rise to 745 tonnes by 2025. Its goal is to ensure proper waste segregation, recycling, and reduced landfill use through social media campaigns, workshops, and local partnerships. The initiative aims to promote sustainable practices with a green café initiative and provide waste management equipment to households. Challenges include securing MOUs with local governments and obtaining funding. Expected outcomes include improved waste segregation in Godawari Municipality, reduced methane emissions, and a scalable model for other areas of Kathmandu Valley.

The project fostered sustainable behavioral changes among team members, café owners, and staff, enhancing environmental consciousness and boosting the café’s sales revenue. It resulted in a significant reduction in food waste and improved waste segregation practices, while also attracting local government attention. Global interest in e-waste emerged, with participation from teams in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The @greenrise_np15 social media account reached 4.7k users, and student awareness of e-waste’s harmful effects increased. A podcast raised awareness about climate change and gender impacts, amplifying the message of climate action.
